The Australian 1925 Penny
There were only 117,600 Australian 1925 pennies minted. All of these specimens came from the Melbourne mint There was a further 832,200 pennies produced that year but they were all made in Sydney using the 1924 die.
By choosing to use up the previous year's coin dies instead of minting all 1925 pennies a scarcity was created. As a result the 1925 Australian penny is recognized as one of the scarcest by collectors. It is regarded as the third most rare Australian copper coin.
There is also a further subset of these 1925 pennies with a 'broken N'. In these coins the second 'N' has a broken left vertical section. Such oddities were produced due to an irregularity in the manufacturing die or punch.
